PLANNING INFORMATION

Entry Fees

  • NZ$80.00 per individual rider (non-refundable)
  • NZ$45.00 per school team event entry (non-refundable)
  • Payment is due within 7 days of invoice receipt
  • Invoices will be issued to school accounts managers after entries close

Eligibility

Students must be aged over 10 and under 13 years as of 31 December 2025. For the 2026 Games, eligible birth years are 2013, 2014, and 2015. Birthdates must be provided during registration.

There is no restriction on the number of BMX riders a school may register. If entries are over or under subscribed, the organising committee reserves the right to amalgamate divisions at the discretion of the Race Commissaire.

Multi-Code Participation

Students may enter more than one sporting code, provided they meet permitted code crossover eligibility.

Please note: No timetable adjustments will be made to accommodate scheduling conflicts between sporting codes. It is the responsibility of each school and the parents/caregivers to ensure that students’ chosen events do not overlap.​​​​​​​

Discipline

The BMX competition will consist of four moto heats, followed by quarter‑finals, semi‑finals, and a final. Quarter‑finals and semi‑finals will only be held if entry numbers require them.

Randomised team heats will be held, with the top four schools progressing to the finals. Finalists will be determined by the total points earned by all riders competing for their representative school.

RULES​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

  1. There is no limit to the number of entries a school may submit in each division.
  2. Only Track Officials are permitted in track areas during racing. Caregivers and support staff must not enter the track at any time but may meet riders in the PR area, where staff will escort them to their riders
  3. Team managers are responsible for their riders, as well as their riders’ parents and supporters. Please ensure the safety and enjoyment of all competitors remains the highest priority.

BMX Bike Rules 

The Zespri AIMS Games meeting will be conducted under the technical rules set out by the Tauranga BMX Club in the BMX Racing Zespri AIMS Games Rule Book, with local rules taking precedence including the following:

  1. The Tauranga BMX Club reserves the right to determine the number of Officials, at the discretion of the Race Commissaire.
  2. Riders must be current members of a local BMX club affiliated to their National Body, BMX NZ, with a minimum of club level membership only.
  3. All bikes and helmets being used in the event MUST be inspected and passed by a scrutineer official during the registration process.
  4. It is the responsibility of the competitor to have their bike in a safe working order. The scrutineer officials and race commissaire reserve the right to refuse the use of a bike and/or helmet they judge to be not fit for purpose.
  5. Rider registration packs, including Zespri AIMS Games number plates, are to be collected from the event director at the managers meeting. Please note: All Zespri AIMS Games number plates will be handed to managers to distribute to their school participants.
  6. The school teams can be made up of any gender and year – there is no limit to the number of teams per school.

Bike Specification

  1. Bicycle must have 20” wheels (or at the discretion of the commissaire), single speed, with no stand, pegs, bells, lights and light mounts, carriers, or go-pro’s or their mounts.
  2. Race bike is not compulsory, though recommended.
  3. Wheel nuts and bolts are tight.
  4. Hub cones, bottom bracket, and headset must not have excessive play.
  5. Wheels run true (straight) without loose or broken spokes.
  6. Rear brake only, in working condition with no rubbing on rim.
  7. Chain has enough tension so there is no slack.
  8. Handlebars have end caps, or enclosed grips.
  9. Tyres have sufficient tread and are inflated to recommend pressure (see the sidewall of the tyre).

Rider Requirements

  1. Riders must have a full-face helmet, which meets a safety standard (ANSI, SNELL, or NZ STANDARD), with no signs of previous impact or go-pro mounts.
  2. Enclosed shoes.
  3. Riders to ride flat pedals (no clip shoes or pedals). 
  4. Long pants (no shorts) and long-sleeved shirt (tucked in).
  5. Protective pads are not compulsory, though recommended.
  6. Full fingered gloves.
  7. PLEASE NOTE: It is the responsibility of the competitor to have their bike in safe working order. The event director and race commissaire reserve the right to refuse the use of a bike or helmet judged “not fit for purpose”. Riders are reminded that they compete at their own risk.

INFORMATION

Health and Safety

  1. All competitors, team managers, and schools are reminded that they compete at their own risk and absolve the Tauranga BMX Club, AIMS Games Trust, event director, race commissaire, all officials, helpers, and volunteers from any blame or claim.
  2. The track is challenging and a moderate to high level of fitness is required.
  3. Officials will be located on track with radio coverage to other officials, medics, race commissaire and event director in case of emergency.
  4. It is the individuals' and the school’s responsibility to have their bikes in a safe and working condition and adhere to the Health and Safety plan set out by the Tauranga BMX Club.
  5. Clear instruction to team managers will be given about the extent of the organiser’s responsibilities at the managers meeting.

Race Commissaire

  1. The Tauranga BMX Club appoints the race commissaire to whom general complaints can be directed.
  2. Complaints must be lodged by team managers only, with riders on their bike in full safety gear, within 10 minutes of the completion of the race on the official disputes form.

MEDAL PRESENTATIONS

Individual Division

  • The top three riders in each division will receive medals.
  • The top eight riders in each division will receive a Zespri AIMS Games number plate.

Lap Time Records

  • Medals will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place lap time records in each class division.
  • The top eight lap time record holders will receive a time trial certificate.
