PLANNING INFORMATION

Costs

  • 5-Aside Basketball $960.00 per team (NZ$)
  • Strictly non-refundable.
  • School teams that withdraw from the Zespri AIMS Games after 28th May 2025, will lose their tournament entry fee and will be excluded from participating in Zespri AIMS Games for the next two years.
  • Payment MUST be made within seven days of receipt of invoice.
  • Invoices will be sent to the school accounts manager after the entry closing date, Wednesday, 28th May 2025.

Entries Close

  • Wednesday 28th May 2025, at 7:59 PM.
  • Entries for the 2025 Zespri AIMS Games must be submitted online through the online registration system. 
  • Registrations will only be accepted from the school's designated Zespri AIMS Games Coordinator.
  • Schools are allocated a unique Zespri AIMS Games registration log in code to complete their entries.

Competitor's Age

Competitors must be over 10 years of age and under 13 years of age, as at 31st December the year before the tournament year. Competitor’s birthdates will be required on school registration documentation. For the 2025 Zespri AIMS Games, the eligible birth years are 2012, 2013, and 2014.

Divisions

  • Girls 5 Aside Division (maximum of 12 / minimum of 8 players per team) / maximum of one Girls 5 Aside team per school.
  • Boys 5 Aside Division (maximum of 12 players per team / minimum of 8 players per team) / maximum of one Boys 5 Aside team per school.
  • Schools may register in both divisions (1 x boys team and 1 x girls team).
  • Maximum of 80 teams in each division.
  • After pool play games, Boys and Girls 5 Aside teams will split into three grades.
  1. Premiership – Top three teams will win medals and certificates.
  2. Championship – Top three teams will win certificates.
  3. Plate – Top three teams will win certificates.
  4. The team numbers in each grade will be dependent on entries.
  • To ensure players are given equal opportunities the AIMS Games Trust recommends all players get a minimum of half a game’s play, per game.
  • Strictly no mixed gender teams in the 5-Aside divisions (3x3 Basketball has a mixed gender competition).

Multiple Sporting Codes

  • Students may compete in more than one sporting code, provided they are in line with the permitted code crossovers. 
  • Timetable allowances will not be made for any competitors, and it is the sole responsibility of the school to check for programming conflicts. 
  • Students participating in the 2025 Zespri AIMS Games can only compete in one team sport.  This means that students competing in 5-Aside Basketball strictly cannot also compete in the following sporting codes – 3x3 Basketball, Football, Futsal, Hockey, Netball, Rip Rugby, Rugby Sevens or Water Polo.

Officials

  1. Teams are to provide one competent score bench person for their game.
  2. All games will be provided with referees by the tournament referee organising committee.
  3. If you have a qualified referee attending with your team, please let the tournament organiser know prior to the event.

Placing/seeding

  • All teams will be placed into pools based on a combination of 2024 seedings and a geographic spread. Seedings will be at the tournament organiser’s discretion.  
  • The Boys Division and the Girls Division are each capped at 80 teams.  If oversubscribed, the top 65 placed teams from 2024 will receive automatic entry, and the remaining 15 places will be determined by ballot if necessary.
  • If registration for a division is oversubscribed, then the opportunity to participate will be at the discretion of the executive committee and no further correspondence will be entered into (if unsuccessful the registration fee will be refunded).

RULES

Boys and Girls 5 Aside Division rules

  1. Size six ball for the Boys Division and Size 5 ball for the Girls Division.
  2. Match balls will be provided.
  3. Game times will be 4 x 8 minutes quarters, running clock. One minute between quarters and two-minute half time. Games will start to time.
  4. One thirty second time out per half – none in the last three minutes of the game even if you have it in prior to the last three minutes (except for in  semi-finals and finals for premiership grade only 1 - 16).
  5. Substitutions are to be notified to the bench and are allowed to take the court on any dead ball.
  6. This tournament has NO shot clock. 8 second half-court rule still applies.
  7. On the fifth personal foul the player MUST leave the court.
  8. Four Team fouls allowed per quarter. Free throws to be taken on fifth team foul.
  9. Free-throws: Any free-throws can be shot or ball inbound from the side or base, depending on where the foul occurred, EXCEPT in the And one situation where the one free-throw must be shot. Coaches to communicate what option to referee quickly – if no communication, shots will be taken. All free-throws awarded are to be taken within 5 seconds from the time the referee passes the ball to the shooter.
  10. Points: two for a win and one for a loss. (note – sentence in brackets removed)
  11. If scores are tied at full time, a jump ball will be held at centre court and Golden Goal will be played.  The next team to score a point wins.
  12. Minimum of eight players per team with a maximum of twelve.
  13. No mixed gender teams in the Girls Division and Boys Division for the 5 on 5.
  14. Protective knee and elbow pads allowed. 
  15. Mouth guards are compulsory and must be worn at all times.
  16. Man to man defence is to be played at all times (no zone defence) as per BBNZ Under 15 Rules.
  17. As per BBNZ Under 15 Rules there will be three pointers.
  18. Team management check the score sheets ten minutes prior to the start of your first game.
  19. Scoresheets will be checked against team registration sheets to ensure that there are no players playing who were not included in the verified team registration.
  20. If a player is not included on the first score sheet, then they are unable to play in any future games.
  21. Score bench will be provided for finals.
  22. Semi finals and finals (Premiership grade only - 1 -16) – the clock will be stopped for all violations in the last three minutes of the game. If the referee calls for refs time the clock will stop during the game for semi finals and finals.
  23. Semi finals and finals (Premiership grade only - 1 -16) – clock stops on a made basket in the final two minutes of the last quarter as per FIBA rules.

MEDAL PRESENTATIONS

The prizegiving will take place after all games completed.


5 Aside Premiership Grade:

  • 1st Boys will receive the gold medals and certificates
  • 2nd Boys will receive silver medals and certificates
  • 3rd Boys will receive bronze medals and certificates
  • 1st Girls will receive the gold medals and certificates
  • 2nd Girls will receive silver medals and certificates
  • 3rd Girls will receive bronze medals and certificates

5 Aside Championship Grade:

  • 1st, 2nd and 3rd for Boys and Girls will receive certificates

5 Aside Plate Grade:

  • 1st, 2nd and 3rd for Boys and Girls will receive certificates
