PLANNING INFORMATION

Entry Fees

  • NZ$400.00 per team (non-refundable)

  • Team withdrawals received after 3 June 2026 will result in loss of the entry fee and a two‑year exclusion from future Zespri AIMS Games.

  • Payment is due within 7 days of invoice receipt

  • Invoices will be issued to school accounts managers after entries close

Eligibility

Students must be aged over 10 and under 13 years as of 31 December 2025. For the 2026 Games, eligible birth years are 2013, 2014, and 2015. Birthdates must be provided during registration.

Competition Divisions

3×3 Basketball Mixed Division

  • Maximum of 5 players per team

  • Minimum of 4 players per team

  • Minimum of 2 girls per team

  • Each school may register a maximum of two Mixed 3x3 Basketball teams.

  • Players may register for either 3×3 Basketball or 5‑Aside Basketball, but not both.

  • Students registered in 3×3 Basketball may compete in only one team and cannot play across multiple teams

3×3 Basketball Boys Division​​​​​​​

  • Maximum of 5 players per team

  • Minimum of 4 players per team

  • Each school may register a maximum of two Boys’ 3x3 Basketball teams.

  • Players may register for either 3×3 Basketball or 5‑Aside Basketball, but not both.

  • Students registered in 3×3 Basketball may compete in only one team and cannot play across multiple teams.

Oversubscription

Each division is capped at a maximum of 32 teams.


  • If entries exceed this limit, teams will be accepted in the following order of preference:

  1. The top 24 placed teams from 2025 will receive automatic entry.

  2. Schools entering more than one team in a division will be offered one place rather than two.

  3. Remaining places will be allocated via random ballot.

  • Schools will be notified as soon as possible, and no later than 10 June 2026, if their team has not been accepted.

  • In the event of oversubscription, participation will be at the discretion of the Executive Committee. No further correspondence will be entered into. If a team is unsuccessful, the registration fee will be refunded.

Seeding

  • Teams will be allocated into pools using a combination of 2025 seedings and geographic distribution.

  • Final seedings will be determined at the discretion of the tournament organisers.

  • No further correspondence will be entered into regarding seedings.

Officials

  • Each team must provide one competent score bench person for their games.

  • Referees for all matches will be appointed by the Tournament Organising Committee.

  • If a qualified referee is attending with your team, please advise the Tournament Organiser prior to the event.

Multi-Code Participation

  • Students may enter more than one sporting code, provided they meet permitted code crossover eligibility.

  • Students participating in the 2026 Zespri AIMS Games may enter only one team sport. Those registered in 3×3 Basketball are not eligible to compete in 5‑Aside Basketball, Football, Futsal, Hockey, Netball, Rip Rugby, Rugby Sevens, or Water Polo.

Please note: No timetable adjustments will be made to accommodate scheduling conflicts between sporting codes. It is the responsibility of each school and the parents/caregivers to ensure that students’ chosen events do not overlap.​​​​​​​

3×3 Basketball teams wishing to attend the Zespri AIMS Games Opening Ceremony are recommended to book tickets for Show 2 (7:00 PM).

RULES


  1. The official ball will be used at all times. Match balls are provided. Balls are a size 6 with the weight of a size 7 ball.
  2. Game time will be 10 minutes running clock or first team to 21 points. Games will start to time.
  3. Game must start with three players per team (minimum of one girl if playing in the Mixed Division).
  4. Maximum of five players – minimum of two girls per team if playing in the Mixed Division.
  5. At least one girl from each team must be on the court at all times if playing in the Mixed Division.
  6. Paper, scissors, rock will determine who starts the game. Team that wins can decide whether it takes the ball or leaves it.
  7. Every shot inside the arc shall be awarded one 1 point. Every shot behind the arc shall be awarded two 2 points. Every successful free-throw shall be awarded one 1 point.
  8. Overtime – First team to score two points wins the game.
  9. Mouth guards are compulsory.
  10. Man to Man defence to be played at all times.
  11. Substitutions can be made on any dead ball or they can enter the game after teammate steps off the court and they touch hands behind the end line opposite the basket. Substitutions require no action from the referees or table officials.
  12. 6 team fouls allowed. On the 7th, 8th and 9th team foul 2 free throws will be awarded. On the 10th team foul 2 free throws and ball possession shall be awarded.
  13. Stalling or failing to play actively shall be a violation. Teams must attempt a shot within 12 seconds. Referees will manage the 12 second shot clock. Referee to warn and count down the last 5 seconds.
  14. Possession following a successful basket – Defence pass ball in right under hoop and ball to be dribbled or passed to a player behind the arc. Defensive team are not allowed to play for the ball inside the “no-charge semi-circle” area underneath the basket.
  15. Following a dead ball – Ball to be checked behind the arc at the top.
  16. Following a defensive rebound or steal – Ball to be dribbled/passed behind the arc.
  17. Following a jump ball situation – defence takes possession.
  18. Teams to provide their own score bench personnel.
  19. Score bench will be provided for semi-finals and final.
  20. Protective knee and elbow pads are allowed.
  21. Players only will be allowed on the court during warm-ups and games as per FIBA rules. Coaches and managers are to remain in the spectator's area.

MEDAL PRESENTATIONS

Prizegiving will take place once all games have been completed.
